“The best time to get adjusted is at birth. The second best time is now!”
Dr. Grabouski is Overland Park’s premier specialist in prenatal and pediatric care. He has checked babies as young as a couple hours old all the way through to key development milestones.
Lots of people wonder why do babies and children need chiropractic care? Being born is hard work– for mom and baby. Pressures and forces are exerted onto your baby during gestation and delivery. A study by Viola Frymann states that 90 percent of newborns suffered the effects of birth trauma: associated strain through the neck and cranial areas following birth. Left uncorrected, this trauma continues to impact a baby’s spinal growth and development, reducing the healthy function of the nervous system. This may cause health issues later in life that could easily have been prevented.
How does chiropractic help babies?
Chiropractic care is focused solely on removing nerve dysfunction (which improves brain-body communication) so a new baby can grow, develop, and function at their highest potential. Regular chiropractic care during all stages of childhood helps with removing stress from the spine and in turn the nervous system. With babies, the first five years are essential for brain development, with an extra emphasis on Year 1. Since infancy is the time of greatest brain development, infancy is the time to ensure the health of the nervous system which controls baby’s growth and development. Chiropractors who take care of infants look for disturbances in their spine that impact the nervous systems and can interfere with healthy growth and development.
Here are some of the most common frequently asked questions we answer in our Overland Park office.
How long after babies are born until they can be adjusted?
There is no minimum time frame! Bring them in to get checked as early as you’d like.
Does it hurt their little bodies?
Not at all! Adjustments for babies are not the same as what you see for adults. Baby adjustments are soft, safe, and focused for your little ones and their developing spines. We always tell people that the pressure used is about the same as checking the ripeness of a tomato! (Some babies sleep through the whole thing) Oftentimes, babies sleep right through them!
What do you look for when adjusting babies?
Tight musculature, decreased motion in a particular joint, posture, certain head tilts, if baby favors looking in one direction vs. the other, and more. Anything that could be causing baby discomfort.
What do baby adjustments help with? So many things!
Trouble latching, tongue ties, torticollis, colic and fussiness, constipation and/or gas, acid reflux, trouble sleeping, ear infections, immune system response, supporting physical development…the list goes on!
